Mission or Vision

In my career I have seen teams and companies struggling with the definitions and their corresponding communication. What is a mission and what is the difference to a vision? Also I strongly believe in successful management a comprehensive understanding of mission and vision and/or strategy and tactics is essential for an effective organizational leadership.

Vision: The vision of a company is a forward-looking, aspirational statement that articulates the desired future state of the organization. It serves as a beacon, inspiring and aligning stakeholders toward a common goal. A company's vision is often broad, encompassing the overarching impact it aspires to make in its industry or society. It provides the foundation for strategic planning and decision-making, acting as a guiding light for the organization's long-term trajectory.

Mission: The mission of a company defines its purpose and outlines the fundamental reason for its existence. It clarifies the organization's core values, target audience, and the value it aims to deliver. A mission statement is more specific than a vision, focusing on the day-to-day activities and operations that contribute to the realization of the broader vision.

Next week I explain the difference to tactic and strategy.
